Blog Action Day

Blog Action Day is on Oct 15 (yea, I'm late) when all bloggers around the world are encouraged to post about one topic. Last year's involved the environment, and this year's is about POVERTY.

So poverty....the concept is so abstract for me. I mean, I've seen poverty at its worst in many foreign countries, but have yet to be stimulated to action. The sympathy is just not there. Especially for the homeless here in our country. Why? I don't really know. Maybe I'm cold-hearted and just see natural selection at work. Or maybe I have some irrational faith in the human instinct for survival that seems to have been overshadowed by the vices and apathies of a hand-it-to-me society. But generalizations are a no-no. Or maybe, we should take note of the exceptions. Either way, the ethics that my parents drilled into my head have said otherwise. If they can survive the largest genocide in human histroy (30M in the Cultural Revolution) and build a new life in a new country, without a penny nor the ability to communicate with a single English word, then I think some "homeless" folks should simply GOYA (get off your ass). Stop depending on an oversized government or poor college students to uplift your lives. Take some personal responsibility and make something happen. Seriously.
